FME TVET News: Over 95,000 Apply for FG’s Vocational Training Just 3 Days After Relaunch

FME TVET News: More than 95,000 applications received so far, 3 days after launch. In a remarkable show of interest, more than 95,000 Nigerians have applied for the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training ( FME TVET initiative) program within just three days of its relaunch. The initiative, oversees by the Federal Ministry of Education (FME), aims to empower youths with practical skills and prepare them for Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape.

The program was officially unveiled last Friday in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. Speaking about the overwhelming response, Dr. Alausa expressed satisfaction with the surge in applications and emphasized the importance of technical education in national development.

“The ministry is thrilled by the overwhelming interest in the TVET Initiative,” said Dr. Alausa. “Receiving over 95,000 applications in such a short time clearly demonstrates the strong desire among Nigerians to acquire relevant skills for the modern workforce.”

Following the rollout, the ministry received feedback from applicants experiencing challenges—particularly delays linked to discrepancies between the names on their Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) and National Identification Numbers (NIN).

In response, the ministry has assured applicants that steps are being taken to address the problem. Applicants are being urged to ensure names on both records, BVN and NIN, are correct and to visit the nearest NIMC office to make necessary corrections if needed.

“To avoid delays, please ensure that the names on your BVN and NIN match exactly,” the minister advised via his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The TVET program is open to students attending federal and state technical colleges. Enrollees will benefit from a robust support system that includes:

  • Free tuition
  • Accommodation
  • Daily meals
  • A monthly stipend of ₦22,500 to 45,000

This initiative is designed to address the gap in tertiary education access, as statistics show that only about 1.8 million out of 5.2 million secondary school graduates gain university admission each year.

The relaunch of the TVET program is part of a broader plan by the federal government to transition Nigeria into a knowledge-driven economy. Over the long term, the initiative aims to train more than 7 million young Nigerians in a diverse array of trades and vocational skills.

Graduates will not only receive starter kits to launch their careers but will also have access to single-digit interest loans, thanks to a collaboration with the Bank of Industry (BOI). This financial support is intended to help participants kickstart small businesses or pursue gainful employment.
