New Zealand

In New Zealand, trade certification is through apprenticeships and training programs overseen by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and various industry training organizations (ITOs). Rather than a single “trade test,” workers complete a training pathway that ends in a qualification. For trades like electricians and plumbers, you’ll also need to pass licensing exams regulated by specific boards like the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) or Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB).

Who needs it: Any tradesperson, especially migrants seeking New Zealand recognition.

Application process: You first of all enroll in an apprenticeship, earn an NZQA-recognized qualification, and apply to the relevant licensing board.

South Africa

In South Africa, trade tests are an essential step of becoming a certified artisan and are managed by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). After completing an apprenticeship training or gaining knowledge through working experience, candidates can register for a trade test at an accredited testing center.

Who needs it: Apprentices and experienced artisans aiming for government-recognized trade certificates.

Application process: Apply through a QCTO-accredited trade test center, submit required documents, and pass a practical assessment.

Philippines

In the Philippines, trade certification is handled by TESDA (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority) and is known as National Certificates (NCs), which one can obtain through competency-based assessments. It is open for fresh graduates from a vocational school or workers with years of experience; you can apply for an assessment at any TESDA-accredited center.

Who needs it: Vocational graduates, skilled workers, or those seeking certification for local or overseas employment.

Application process: You need to book an assessment at a TESDA-accredited center, take a practical exam, and receive an NC if successful.

Trades covered: Automotive repair, welding, electrical installation, HVAC, cooking, tailoring, and more.

India’s trade testing system is managed under the Directorate General of Training (DGT) through its ITIs (Industrial Training Institutes), and it is called the All India Trade Test (AITT), which awards a National Trade Certificate (NTC) upon passing.

Application process: ITI students are registered automatically. Others must apply via the NCVT MIS portal or through state councils.

In Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment administers trade tests through accredited vocational centers across the states. The result is a Trade Test Certificate categorized as Grade III, II, or I, based on the applicant’s performance and experience.

Who needs it: Artisans and skilled workers wanting government-recognized certification.

Application process: Visit an accredited trade test center, apply with the required documents, and take a practical and/or written exam.

Application process: Complete an apprenticeship, meet work-hour requirements, and apply to the relevant state board for testing.
